What is Online Raga Jam?

Raga Jam is a music or dance collaboration in a group of 4-6 that you can do with like-minded peers. It is a modular program designed to help you go from concept to full-fledged professional music or dance video.

Music Raga Jam requires everyone to have a good mic at home, like the Blue Yeti or a similar condenser mic to record audio. It also needs them to have the ability to take simple, static video footage with a DSLR or a high-quality smartphone that can take HD footage. Check here for more details.

What are the Stages in Online Raga Jam?

Application: Apply as an individual to get evaluated
Collaboration: Collaborate with mentor to structure a piece
Audio: Each participant records audio and we get it mixed (for Music  Raga Jam)
Video: Each participant records video and we get it edited
Release: Release on Raga Labs channel.

What is the program fee?

Music:

Program fee covers audio mixing, video editing, release and promotion. It also covers mentor ship with an instructor who will help develop an idea and structure that is unique to your group. Participants will do their own audio recording and video shoot. For a group of 6 musicians, it costs $275 per participant. If you want to be in a smaller group, fee will be pro-rated. Minimum group size is 3 and at least 2 vocalists are required.

Dance:

Program fee covers video editing, release and promotion. It also covers mentor ship with an instructor who will help develop an idea and choreograph that is unique to your group. Participants will do their own video shoot. For a group of 4 dancers, it costs $275 per participant. If you want to be in a smaller group, fee will be pro-rated. Minimum group size is 3.

Process

Custom Raga Jam kicks off with the collaboration stage. Under a Raga Jam mentor, your team brainstorms ideas, puts together a structure to your music piece, refines it to make it unique and interesting, and gets ready for production. The basic package includes 4 sessions of mentor ship, but you can add on more if you need more help at an additional fee.

Each participant to record his/her audio and send to us for mixing. Once the final audio is ready, each participant to do the video recording.

Once the video is ready, our panel will review and see its suitability for release. If the quality of the content (not production) meets our artistic standards, the video will be released on Raga Labs, otherwise the team will be given the video and they can decide to release on their own. Raga Labs branding templates will be added for release on our channel.

Collaboration Stages

Session 1: Ideation
Teams bring 3 ideas, and Instructor will bring 3. By end of the session, instructor will finalize the idea for the collaboration.

Session 2: Skeleton
Teams will come prepared with ideas, and instructor will help the team put together an interesting structure to the collaboration.

Session 3: Flow and Dynamics
Instructor will help the team identify places where energy and dynamics can be boosted and reduced to make the piece engaging and well flowing.

Session 4: Final Structure
This will be the final session to help refine and finalize the entire structure. If teams need more support, they can pay and sign up for additional sessions.

How Will The Team Collaborate?

Teams can have the sessions via Google Hangout or any other online tool. The Mentor also conducts the sessions online only.

When Will The Group Decide The Day And Time For The Sessions? Can I Know The Schedule Before I Sign Up?

Once the group is confirmed, everyone will decide a specific day and time every week with the Coordinator – which means it will definitely be convenient for you. We cannot decide this before you sign up unfortunately

Is It Possible To Join A Part Of The Project?

No. Once you join a team, it is a start-to-end commitment to produce a wonderful video with them. It is not possible to leave or join in the middle

Who are the mentors? Are they IndianRaga Fellows?

In the past, we have had Vinod Krishnan, Shraddha Mohan, and other very senior IndianRaga Fellows as the mentors for different Raga Jam team. The team will surely be mentored by a senior IndianRaga Fellow who does brilliant work in composing and putting together a Raga Jam. But we do not guarantee a certain mentor at the very beginning because all our mentors work closely with founder Sriram Emani to ensure the best possible Raga Jam experience so we do not see each lab being different based on the mentor.

Is This For Both Adults And Kids? How Are The Groups Decided?

This is definitely for both adults and kids. Groups are decided to ensure that all members in the group have similar caliber. Since Raga Jam is not for Beginners you do not run the risk of working with someone who is not talented. While signing up if you do have a group in mind, you can give it a name, and each applicant should mention that in the form while signing up. If multiple members of the group are selected, we are happy to let them work together.

Is This Also For Dance? Which All Genres Are Included In Raga Jam?

Yes this is for dance also. We are currently able to do Carnatic, Hindustani, fusion, semi-classical/movie, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathak, pure instrumental, a cappella, jazz collaborations, and are constantly trying out new exciting genres! We encourage everyone from any culture or ethnicity, with any artistic skill in music or dance, in any genre, to apply.

For Dance Raga Jam, the group must use music that they already own entirely and belongs to them, or they are free to use any of the 500 tracks available on the IndianRaga or Raga Labs channels that is produced by IndianRaga. If other tracks are used, the team runs the risk of the audio being muted, or facing legal action for violating copyright, both of which are not in our control, so we are unable to allow it.
