Workshop 1
How to make a classical mix of a pop song
Instructor: Vinod Krishnan

Description
If you love IndianRaga’s classical versions of Shape Of You, Mi Gente, and others, then this workshop is for you! Learn how senior IndianRaga Fellow Vinod Krishnan structures an IndianRaga classical mix while also experimenting with your own classical mix in small groups. Learning while doing and having fun – can’t get any better in this unique, super fun workshop!

What To Expect
Vinod will spend some time initially talking through how Shape Of You Carnatic Mix was structured and created. This will include some Do’s and Don’t’s while doing classical mixes, and also why some approaches work better than others. Participants will look at how different techniques and components of Indian classical music can be applied to pop songs. The workshop will help identify songs that lend themselves to a classical mix, determining what aspects of classical music to use and how to put these components together. He will then take you through a step by step process of creating your own classical mix, in small groups, which is in line with IndianRaga’s roots in MIT’s action-based learning. Teams will then present their fun jams to each other at the end!

Who Is It For
Any and all are welcome to sign up! You do not need very extensive training in classical music, but some exposure to figuring out the notes behind the music would help. If you’re an instrumentalist please feel free to bring your instrument with you, and also think of a pop song that you’d like to work on in your group!

Duration: 90 Minutes
